Amazon Gated Categories List: What Still Needs Approval

Grocery, luggage, medical devices, shoes, handbags, sunglasses and fine jewelry need Amazon's approval. How to check a product before you buy stock, and what Amazon asks for.

Amazon Gated Categories List: What Still Needs Approval

The Short Answer

If you are deciding what to stock on Amazon, check the category first: Amazon's own approval page names grocery and gourmet foods, luggage and travel accessories, medical devices and accessories, and shoes, handbags and sunglasses as common examples, not the full list. Fine jewelry needs approval too, and a brand can need its own approval on top of its category. Our aged accounts are already ungated, often for dozens of brands, shown live before you buy.

Gated means Amazon wants to approve you before you list a category, a brand or a product. Ungated means the account can list it today.

Which Amazon Categories Require Approval?

Five categories are named on Amazon's own pages as needing approval: the four common gated categories on its approval page, plus fine jewelry on its Jewelry page. Amazon's Restricted products page says its examples are not all-inclusive, so a product outside this list can still be gated.

Here is the list as Amazon publishes it, grouped by how each category opens, with where each line comes from:

How it opensCategoriesWhat it takes to openSource
Documents, then a reviewGrocery and gourmet foods; luggage and travel accessories; medical devices and accessories; shoes, handbags and sunglassesInvoices within 180 days, photos, letters or certificates where they applyCategories and products that require approval
Performance bar first, then the applicationFine jewelryMeet performance criteria such as a cancellation rate of 2.5% or less, then applyJewelry

The approval page puts the reason in one line: "You need approval to ensure products sold in our store are safe, authentic, and meet regulations."

  • Brands are gated too. Amazon's example is Nike shoes: one approval for the Shoes category and a second for the Nike brand.
  • Fine jewelry has an entry bar. Amazon's Jewelry page sets performance criteria before you can even apply, including a cancellation rate of 2.5% or less. "If your account does not meet the minimum criteria, your Fine Jewelry application will be rejected." A seller without a Professional selling plan has to upgrade once approved.

Amazon's Selling Applications FAQ spells out the stacking:

"Some products may have overlapping selling restrictions that will require you to submit separate applications to become approved to sell a single product."

What Is the Difference Between Gated and Restricted?

A gated category can be opened: you apply, Amazon reviews, and an approved account can list. A restricted product is one Amazon limits or bans for safety, legal or policy reasons, and an application may not open it at all. Amazon's restricted products page covers both, which is why the two words get mixed up.

The Restricted products page says, under its related policies: "Certain categories require you to obtain pre-approval from Amazon before listing in those categories." Another line adds that some categories need extra information or a supplemental guarantee before you list.

The Safety, compliance, and product restrictions page describes the other side:

"Certain products are restricted or prohibited from sale in Amazon's store, regardless of whether the restriction stems from a safety concern, a legal or regulatory requirement, or Amazon's own policies."

Its examples are weapons, certain chemicals and age-restricted items. The restricted products page also names products available only by prescription.

Gated and restricted, side by side. What it means: Gated category Approval first, then you list, Restricted product Limited or banned by law or policy; Examples on Amazon's pages: Gated category Grocery, luggage, shoes, fine jewelry, Restricted product Weapons, certain chemicals, age-restricted items

The restricted products page lists corrective actions including suspending selling privileges, destroying inventory in fulfillment centers without reimbursement and permanent withholding of payments. So a restricted product is not something to test by listing it.

How Do You Check If a Product Needs Approval?

Search the product in Add a Product in Seller Central and click Show limitations. Amazon then shows one of three statuses: Sell this product, meaning no approval is needed; Apply to sell, meaning approval is required; or Not Available, meaning it cannot be listed. Do this before you buy any inventory.

Amazon's Selling Applications FAQ is where this comes from. It also says a feed error can be checked the same way: open the ASIN that returned the error in Add a Product.

Check a product before you buy stock. Add a Product - Search the exact product you plan to sell.; Show limitations - View which approvals are required.; Read the status - Sell this product, Apply to sell, or Not Available.; Check the brand too - A brand and its category can each need an application.; Check again later - Amazon adds restrictions to products already selling.

The FAQ says: "Even if you were selling your product before, you may be subject to new restrictions". A category open on your account this month is not a promise for next month.

If you are checking a whole brand list, not one product, our guide on how to check if a brand is gated on your Amazon account goes through it.

What Does Amazon Ask For When You Apply?

Amazon's approval page tells you to prepare purchase invoices dated within 180 days, clear product photos showing all sides, brand authorization letters where they apply, safety certifications when required, and commercial liability insurance for certain categories. It then says to wait 2 to 7 business days for review.

On insurance, the page says the policy must be written on an occurrence basis and name Amazon.com Services LLC and its affiliates and assignees as additional insured. It applies to categories with enhanced safety listing requirements, whatever your monthly sales. The page does not say which categories those are, so check it before you plan stock.

On safety paperwork, the compliance page warns that documents from some testing providers no longer count. Its advice: "we recommend that you review the list of suspended labs before submitting compliance documentation to Amazon."

And on a no:

  • If Amazon answers "Your account does not qualify", its page says this decision cannot be appealed.
  • Selling Partner Support cannot give more details.
  • The FAQ adds that Amazon "may not accept applications for every product we place selling restrictions on."

  • 2 to 7 days

Amazon's 2 to 7 days is for one review. It is not the time to get a category or brand open. In our own ungating work we plan one month per brand, so nobody panics if the first attempt is not approved. More in how long Amazon ungating takes.

Is the List the Same on Every Amazon Marketplace?

The pages we draw on are Amazon's US Seller Central pages, and they do not say how the list differs on Amazon.co.uk, Canada or Australia. Check the approval page for the marketplace you plan to sell in, inside that marketplace's Seller Central, before you buy stock for it.

For our own accounts the question is simpler. We do not sell or transfer UK or EU marketplace accounts, because they are too complicated to transfer.

What About Amazon Ungated Categories?

Amazon publishes no list of ungated categories. A category not on its approval list can be listed without applying, but a single brand or product inside it can still be gated. So the only real ungated list is the one your own account shows, product by product, when you search it in Add a Product.

What Amazon gives you is the status: a product that shows Sell this product needs no approval on your account. That status can change when Amazon adds restrictions, even to products you were already selling.

That is also why two accounts can see different things on the same ASIN. One account already holds the approval and shows Sell this product. Another sees Apply to sell. The difference between those two words is explained in what Apply to Sell means on Amazon.

The Slow Way, or an Account That Already Has It

Every gated category and brand on this list can be opened the slow way: invoices, photos, an application, a wait, and sometimes a decline. Or you buy an aged account that may already hold them; we check your list against the account first. We show the brands open on each of our aged Amazon accounts live before you buy.

FAQ

What categories are restricted on Amazon in 2026?

Amazon's approval page names grocery and gourmet foods, luggage and travel accessories, medical devices and accessories, and shoes, handbags and sunglasses, its Jewelry page adds fine jewelry, and its compliance page names weapons, certain chemicals and age-restricted items as restricted or prohibited. If you use FBA, there is a second list to check. Amazon's Restricted products page sends FBA sellers to its FBA Product Restrictions page, which lists products that are not eligible for the FBA program. Check both before you send stock in.

Can I sell an account that is already ungated?

Not to us: Seller Accounts sells accounts, it does not buy them. Our sister brand Cash For Stores buys seller accounts, so that is the place to start.

Can a new seller apply to a gated category right away?

Amazon's pages here do not say whether account age matters. What the approval page asks you to prepare is invoices within 180 days, photos, and letters or certificates where needed. Fine jewelry adds a performance bar before you can apply, set out in the list above.

Does an aged account stay ungated forever?

No account does. Amazon says sellers may face new restrictions even on products they sold before. The brands written into your Deal Agreement are the ones we commit to. If one is still gated at delivery, we keep working on it. If it is not open 30 days after delivery, you get a replacement account, then a refund. Before you list under any other brand, check it shows Sell this product.
